Time Market
Food and gathering spot — July 6, 2009
If you live in Tucson you probably know that it’s fairly difficult get by without a car. A byproduct of the sprawling nature of our growth, fueled by cheap and abundant land, has been the creation of city that requires a motorized vehicle to accomplish just about every daily task outside of the home. Something as seemingly simple as a trip to the friendly neighborhood market often requires an extended drive through traffic, followed by the requisite search for an available parking spot.
However, it seems that the love affair with the car has waned a bit in recent years, and there is now a renewed interest in community features that allow residents the opportunity to shed the burden of their vehicle. That was the model for the design of Time Market, located on University Boulevard, just East of 4th Avenue. This small store was built more than 90 years ago, and it has served as a social anchor of sorts for this West University Neighborhood ever since. It now also serves as an example of what many residents hope to create in their own community.
In this story, produced by Luis Carrión we take a look at what Time Market has to offer, and why people seem to appreciate it’s role in the community in spite of the absence of “adequate” parking.
Time Market is located at 444 E. University Blvd.
